Weight Limits Explained — How Heavy Materials Affect Your Rental Cost

Weight is the hidden variable in dumpster pricing. A dumpster full of cardboard weighs almost nothing. A dumpster full of concrete can weigh 10 tons. Understanding weight limits keeps your costs predictable.

Quick Answer

Common materials per cubic yard: household junk weighs 150-300 lbs, wood 300-500 lbs, drywall 500-700 lbs, shingles 700-1,000 lbs, concrete 2,000-2,500 lbs, and dirt 2,200-3,000 lbs. A 20 yard dumpster full of dirt would weigh 22-30 tons — far exceeding the 3-ton limit. Always separate heavy materials like concrete into dedicated containers.

Why Weight Limits Exist

Weight limits exist for two reasons: truck safety and landfill fees. Our roll-off trucks have legal weight limits on public roads — an overweight truck can get fined and impounded. Landfills charge by the ton, so heavier loads cost more to dispose of. Your included weight limit covers the typical load for your dumpster size.

Material Weight Guide

Here's what common materials weigh per cubic yard: household junk (150-300 lbs), wood/lumber (300-500 lbs), drywall (500-700 lbs), asphalt shingles (700-1,000 lbs), concrete/brick (2,000-2,500 lbs), and dirt/soil (2,200-3,000 lbs). A 20 yard dumpster full of dirt would weigh 22-30 tons — far over the 3-ton limit. This is why heavy materials need special handling.

The Concrete and Dirt Exception

Concrete, brick, block, stone, and dirt are so heavy that we handle them differently. If your project is primarily heavy materials, tell us upfront. We'll either set a lower fill level, use a smaller dumpster with a higher weight allowance, or arrange a heavy-debris-specific container. Don't mix heavy materials with light debris — separate loads save money.

How to Estimate Your Load Weight

Describe your project to us and we'll estimate the weight. We've done thousands of rentals and know what a kitchen demo weighs, what a roof tear-off weighs, and what a garage cleanout weighs. Our estimates are based on real scale data, not guesswork. Getting the weight right at booking prevents surprise overages at pickup.
