Query Intent: Understanding What Searchers Really Want

Query intent is the underlying goal behind a search query. Understanding intent is critical because Google ranks pages that best match what the searcher actually wants — not just pages that contain the right keywords.

The Four Types of Search Intent

Informational: the searcher wants to learn something ('how to unclog a drain'). Navigational: they want a specific page ('Home Depot plumbing'). Commercial: they're researching before buying ('best plumber Brooklyn reviews'). Transactional: they're ready to take action ('emergency plumber near me call now'). Service businesses should prioritize commercial and transactional intent keywords.

Matching Content to Intent

A page targeting 'emergency plumber Brooklyn' should have a phone number front and center, immediate trust signals, and a clear call to action — because the searcher's intent is to hire someone right now. A page targeting 'how to fix a leaky faucet' should provide genuine help — which builds trust and can still convert through a 'call a pro' CTA.

Intent and AI Search

AI search platforms are even more intent-focused than Google. When someone asks ChatGPT 'who's the best plumber in Brooklyn,' the AI interprets that as a direct recommendation request — and responds by naming specific businesses. Your content needs to be structured to provide clear, concise answers that AI models can extract for these recommendation queries.

How to Research Intent

The simplest way to understand intent: Google the keyword and look at what ranks. If the top results are all service pages with phone numbers, the intent is transactional. If they're all blog posts, the intent is informational. Match the format and depth of the top-ranking pages, then exceed them in quality, specificity, and structured data.
