Overfilling Your Dumpster — Weight Limits and What Happens When You Exceed Them
There are two ways to overfill a dumpster: too high (over the fill line) and too heavy (over the weight limit). Both cause problems. Here's how to avoid overage charges and keep your project on budget.
Quick Answer
Nothing can extend above the dumpster fill line — it's a DOT regulation for safe road transport. Weight limits are 2 tons for 10 yard, 3 tons for 20 yard, and 4 tons for 30 yard dumpsters. Exceeding weight limits incurs overage charges of $50-$75 per ton, verified by certified landfill scales. Most household debris stays well under the limit.
The Fill Line Rule
Every dumpster has a fill line — the top of the sides. Nothing can extend above this line. It's not just our rule — it's a DOT regulation. Overloaded dumpsters are illegal to transport on public roads because debris can fall off and cause accidents. If your dumpster is over the fill line, our driver can't pick it up until the excess is removed.
Weight Limits by Size
Our weight limits are generous: 10 yard dumpsters include 2 tons (4,000 lbs), 20 yard dumpsters include 3 tons (6,000 lbs), and 30 yard dumpsters include 4 tons (8,000 lbs). Most household debris is light enough that you'll hit the volume limit long before the weight limit. The exception is heavy materials like concrete, dirt, and roofing shingles.
What Triggers Overage Charges
Every load is weighed at the landfill on certified scales. If your load exceeds the included weight, you'll be charged a per-ton overage rate (typically $50-75/ton depending on location). We send you the scale ticket as proof. There are no mystery charges — just documented weights and published rates.
How to Avoid Overages
Tell us what you're disposing of when you book. If you mention concrete, tile, or roofing, we'll recommend the right size and set appropriate weight expectations. For mixed loads with some heavy materials, consider separating the heavy stuff into its own dumpster. Two right-sized dumpsters often cost less than one overloaded one.
