Kitchen Renovation — Demolition Debris and Dumpster Sizing

Kitchen renovations are one of the most common dumpster rental projects in Florida. Cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances, drywall — it all adds up fast. Here's how to size your dumpster right and keep your reno on track.

Quick Answer

A standard kitchen teardown generates 5-10 cubic yards of debris including cabinets, countertops, flooring, and appliances. A 10 yard dumpster handles most kitchen demos. Watch granite countertops — an L-shaped counter weighs 400-600 lbs. Schedule dumpster delivery the day before demo starts so crews have immediate disposal space.

Typical Kitchen Demo Debris Volume

A standard kitchen teardown generates 5-10 cubic yards of debris. That includes 15-25 cabinets, countertops, flooring (100-200 sq ft), appliances, backsplash tile, and drywall. A 10 yard dumpster handles most kitchen demos. If you're also removing flooring in adjacent rooms or doing a full gut to the studs, step up to a 20 yard.

Heavy Materials to Watch For

Granite and stone countertops are extremely heavy — a standard L-shaped granite counter can weigh 400-600 lbs. Ceramic tile with mortar is another heavy hitter. If your kitchen has stone or tile, factor that into your weight limit. You don't want to pay overage charges because your granite countertop put you over.

Timing Your Dumpster With Your Contractor

Coordinate with your contractor on timing. The dumpster should arrive the day before demo starts, not the day of. This gives your crew immediate disposal space when demolition begins. Most kitchen demos take 1-2 days, but the dumpster should stay through the build phase for packaging and cutoff waste.

Appliance Disposal

Refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, and microwaves can all go in the dumpster with one exception: refrigerators and freezers must have their refrigerant (Freon) removed by a certified technician first. Most appliance stores that deliver your new appliances will haul the old ones. If not, just let us know — we can handle refrigerant removal.
