Kitchen Remodel Dumpsters — Cabinets, Countertops, and Appliances
Kitchen remodels are Florida's most popular home renovation project. Whether it's a cosmetic refresh or a full gut-and-rebuild, the demolition phase produces a mountain of debris that needs to go somewhere. Here's your dumpster game plan.
Quick Answer
A full kitchen remodel generates 8-12 cubic yards of debris across demo and construction phases. A 20 yard dumpster covers both phases for most kitchens. Demo debris (cabinets, countertops, tile, appliances) is heaviest — granite countertops alone can weigh 400-600 lbs. Keep the dumpster through the build phase for packaging waste, cutoffs, and material scraps.
Cabinet Removal and Disposal
A typical kitchen has 15-25 cabinets. Upper cabinets are easy to remove and relatively light. Base cabinets with countertops attached are heavier and more awkward. Before demo, check if your cabinets are worth donating — Habitat for Humanity ReStore takes usable cabinets. If they're damaged, dated, or particle board, straight to the dumpster.
Countertop Disposal by Material
Laminate countertops are light and easy to handle. Granite, quartz, and marble countertops are extremely heavy — budget 20-25 lbs per square foot for natural stone. An L-shaped granite counter can weigh 400-600 lbs. For stone countertops, have help for removal and be mindful of your dumpster's weight limit.
Flooring Removal
Kitchen flooring options in Florida range from lightweight (vinyl plank at 2-3 lbs/sq ft) to very heavy (ceramic tile with mortar at 8-12 lbs/sq ft). A 200 sq ft kitchen floor in ceramic tile produces 1,600-2,400 lbs of debris. If your kitchen has tile floors, that weight needs to factor into your dumpster size decision.
The Right Size for Kitchen Remodels
Cosmetic remodel (counters, backsplash, maybe flooring): 10 yard. Full demo including cabinets, counters, flooring, and drywall: 20 yard. Full gut including walls, ceiling, subfloor, and plumbing/electrical rework: 20-30 yard. When in doubt, describe your project to us and we'll recommend the perfect size.
