Domain Rating (DR) is a metric developed by Ahrefs that scores your website's backlink profile strength on a scale of 0 to 100. While it's a third-party metric and not used directly by Google, it correlates strongly with ranking ability and is the industry standard for measuring a site's competitive strength.
How Domain Rating Is Calculated
DR is calculated based on the quantity and quality of external backlinks pointing to your website. Specifically, it looks at how many unique domains link to you, the DR of those linking domains, and how many other sites those domains also link to. A link from a DR 80 site that only links to 10 other sites is worth more than one from a DR 80 site that links to 10,000 sites.
What DR Score Do You Need?
The DR you need depends on your competition. For local service businesses in most markets, a DR of 20-40 is often sufficient to compete effectively. In the NYC SEO space, the top-ranking competitors have DRs around 30 — meaning this is a very winnable market with strategic link building. The key is not having the highest DR overall, but having a higher DR than your direct competitors.
Building DR Strategically
DR grows when authoritative sites link to yours. The fastest ways to build DR include getting featured in local and industry publications, creating linkable content assets that others naturally reference, building relationships with complementary businesses for cross-linking, and leveraging existing high-DR properties you control to pass authority to newer sites.
DR Is a Means, Not an End
Don't chase DR for its own sake. Focus on building links that also drive referral traffic, build brand awareness, and establish your business as an authority in your market. The DR growth will follow naturally. A DR 30 site with perfectly targeted content and strong local signals will outrank a DR 60 site with irrelevant content every time.
